Preamble
Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association of Canada (APMA) members currently produce approximately 15% of the parts for North American automotive manufacturing. Historically, little of this was automotive grade electronics.
The economic downturn in recent years has severely hurt the automotive parts manufacturing sector in Canada - and further reduced Canada's automotive grade electronics business sector. At the same time, however, it has also forced North American auto manufacturers and tier one suppliers to consider new business practices and strategic alliances with smaller, specialized businesses.
The demand for automotive electronics has been boosted recently as the overlap of the information and communications technology sector, the automotive sector and the transportation sector has resulted in the emergence of the connected vehicle.
Little of the emerging advanced automotive grade electronics business necessary to support the connected vehicle concept is delivered by Canadian business. If APMA members were able to capture this market consistent with their share of the broader automotive parts market, they could bring 12,000 new jobs to Canada.
To help take advantage of this market opportunity the APMA has created this Working Group.
Purpose
The APMA Connected Vehicle Working Group has been put together to support the membership through specific actions:
- Provide a forum to match opportunities with Canadian capabilities to create strategic product development
- Collect and share intelligence on connected vehicle directions and developments to support market planning
- Gather, maintain and share information on manufacturing, research, design and software development capabilities capable of supporting automotive grade products in Canada both within and external to the APMA.
